Is it possible to channel someone and not really know WHO you are channeling ?

Odd question, I know .... but the thought just recently occurred to me.

In reading thru this section and other areas of the forum, just about everyone who channels seems to know who it is they are channeling. Is this because they start out their channeling session, asking to ' speak/ hear ' from someone in particular ?

and I am guessing, correct me if I am wrong, that one cannot channel someone who is still living ?

and just for clarification, I am not speaking about the messages a medium/ or psychic receives from deceased relatives.... in my mind that is something totally different from what I understand channeling to be.
