For sure... we need to explore and discover for ourselves.
Not everyone's way is through teaching, though. Some people just notice, "Oh, I could see this differently." Directly experiencing the effects of exercising their own free will.
That's how it began for me. At one point, on my own I saw that if I continued to think the way I was at that moment it would lead to a familiar feeling of depression. So I changed my train of thought and my feeling state along with it.
This realization continues in my life. By making a shift in how and where I direct my attention I choose my reality of the moment.

Silver Birch on free will & consequences:
"He sows, and what he sows he reaps. You cannot escape the Law. You cannot cheat the Law....
If he is a real man, in whom there is something of the Great Spirit, then he, as a man, will want to put right all the things which he put wrong. If he wants to escape the consequences of his actions, then I say he is not a man, he is only a coward...
He had free will and he chose to do wrong instead of doing right. He cannot escape the consequences. He must put it right. He only cheats himself by thinking he can say a magic formula to gain escape. He must reap what he has sown; that is the Law."

All this talk of religion, but it's how you live your life that is the all-important thing.
If you set out each day to do all the goodness and kindness that you can, and to do no harm to man or beast, then you are walking the highest path.
And when your time is up, if you can leave the earth a better place than you found it, then yours will have been a life well lived.
