''There is no such thing as a healthy suntan. "A tan is a response to DNA damage," says Dr. Barbara Gilchrest, a dermatologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Such damage is instrumental in the development of skin cancer, and it also accelerates skin aging. "Some women may tan well for many years, but eventually the skin quality will change, become leathery, develop lentigenes ["age spots"], and then coarse wrinkling," Dr. Gilchrest says. If you're a lifelong tanner, compare the skin on the underside of your upper arm or buttocks to a tanned area, and you'll see evidence of the changes wrought by UV radiation.''

Rejoice, my fellow vampires! We have longevity on our side (just be careful). Are you as irritated as me hearing the same rubbish each late spring, having to sit next to folks who tell one another ''oh you look so healthy with your new tan!'', and you just sit there and think to yourself ''okay... yeah thanks...'' Anyways, it's dangerous and not so healthy.

((this is not an argument against getting sunlight!))

Your body needs sunlight. It doesn't need burns.

I also believe that ...

Disease is a manifestation of a mental reality. If you don't uncover and solve the mental cause (beliefs, emotions, expectations), even if you avoid or cure a particular disease (e.g. skin cancer), another disease will manifest.

I generally agree with this.

A moderate amount of sunlight provides vitamin D that is not that well replaced with supplements.

I used to believe suntans were ok for some people, but now I don't see the point in being in the sun too long. I'd rather be up in the mountains getting some sunshine and fresh air.

Getting sunlight is good. Getting out and sunbathing isn't.

This is primarily (although certainly not exclusively, it is more of a spectrum) advice to 'white' people; Besides the obvious health concerns there is also an aesthetic one. Getting a tan will just speed up the ageing process, and once autumn kicks in again those folks lose their brown tan. The more they repeat that process every year the more likely they'll look like a sack of potatoes. Not overdosing will make you appear younger. But of course, a choice, and fine either way. But the notion that ''tan is healthy and fresh'' is bull. You can't pretend to have the skin protection of a black skin..

Don't look at the sun either, wear sunglasses. Eye damage from sunlight is another concern.

We need to sit out in the sun without glasses for about 10/15 minutes ( OUT of peak time) in order to absorb the vitamins that are crucial for our needs and are absorbed quickly through the eyes ( closed).
This info came from a doctor.

I generally cover up with sleeves, gloves and long pants with a neck wrap on my hat when I do outside jobs to keep off the sun and protect against branches and rocks and stuff, and I also wear kneepads if I have to do stuff low down. When I'm wrapped up and protected I feel like nothing is too hard for me to do.

Cataracts is one issue, so I'd be careful. I have a colleague who seems to spend a lot of his free time outside, thick brown tan now. Also complains about eye damage.

Exposing limbs for a while (and if you're 'white', then you don't need much) is easy way to get vitamin D, as they're usually not exposed throughout much of the year.
