History of Valentine's Day
St. Valentine’s Day but more commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day. This day is celebrated on February 14th and is a day for celebrating the LOVe between to intimate partners.
Valentine’s Day is names after a Christian named Valentine. The name of St. Valentine is not that of one man, but the name of several martyred Saints. The word valentine comes from “valens” meaning worthy, strong and powerful.
History is un clear of the feast on February 14th was a day for one saint or for many saints.
Traditionally it is a day in which LOVers express their LOVe for each other by the presentation of flowers and offering chocolate and greeting cards. This tradition has evolved past just Lover’s to children that exchange in School “Valentine’s” .
In 1784 the popular Children’s Nursery Rhyme was penned.
“ The Rose is red, the Violet’s blue
The honey’s sweet, and so are you
Thou are my LOVe and I am thine
I drew three to my Valentine
The lot was cast and then I drew
And Fortune said it should be you.”
As a child I learned it as :
“Roses are red, Violet’s are blue
Sugar is sweet and so are you.”
Paper Valentine’s found their popular start in England in the early 19th Century. In the UK around 1.3 billion pounds is spent on cards, flowers, and chocolates.
In the USA 190 million Valentine’s are sent if ye add in the school one’s then the number is close to 1 billion.
If anyone else has some tid bits to add please do.
