An exercise for releasing fear
I read an article this morning on the subject of releasing fear that I found very useful, so I just wanted to share as I know that fear is a big stumbling block for the majority of us:

Staying fully present is a sure way to release the binds of fear, something I learned eventually.
I danced around fear over and over before I could do so. Having tools early in my life would have helped me to manage and not become so entrenched in fear which lead to the fear of fear itself. As it turned out, my path to face it, came to meet me anyway, when I realized the uncomfortable wasn't going anywhere until I got comfortable with it ..

I was much the same, well and truly ruled by fear - I was fully 30 years old before I realised just how much fear there was in me, it's funny how something can become so pervasive that you end up being completely oblivious to it! Fear's a mirage, though, from a distance it can seem very real but then when you get up close to it, you realise it was all in your mind. But then we tend to have such a reactive relationship to fear, we'll tend to shy away from it until we have no choice but to turn and face it.
And of course what you say is exactly right - what is required is to be fully present with it, which is to be fully accepting of it. Very important to disbelieve our thoughts, I think, and shift our attention out of our minds, which tend to hop about like they're on hot coals when fear is present. 'Breathe and relax' might sound rather trite, but it can be a real life-saver when you feel like you're about to be overwhelmed by fear.
