Snake in the flat
Dream from last night:
I’m in a flat. My husband or my ex boyfriend (it's not clear who) are in the next room sleeping in bed, which is on the left side, with a girlfriend. I see a snake in the room with me, about 10 ft away on the left side, it is coming in my direction. It is long and slender, black with yellow markings on its back. I run into the bedroom where it is dark but I can see the row of 4 or 5 switches. I try to switch the light on but none of the switches are working. I try the light for the bathroom on the right, it is also not working. I ask them, “Is no switch working? There is a snake.” I don’t get an answer. I’m a bit scared because I don’t know where the snake is now.
The first thing that struck me was the multiple mention of the word "switches". I think this dream refers to my relationships with men, I had four serious relationships in my life. It tells me that switching from one man to the next was/is not working.
But what does the snake stand for? What am I running from?
We have snakes here from time to time, usually harmless ones but once a cobra was in our garden. I'm usually not scared of them but a keep a distance just like I did (or attempted to) in the dream.
I have never seen a black snake with yellow markings, that was quite striking. I must say I don't like the color combination.

I wonder if running from a snake is running from fears within yourself? Perhaps the dream is saying that switching from partner to partner hasn't been able to resolve some deep fear within you.
In your next dream there are teachers, maybe a teacher will come along soon, maybe you are you ripe enough, open enough, and when the student is ready, the teacher will come???

I agree, you are trying to change things (switch) but are still in the dark about something and as such the threat (snake) is still there. The break up could feel like a snaky thing for them to do to you if they have been the ones who broke up with you. But regardless, there is some aspect that you need to shed light on to remover the threat. The important thing to remember is that it is rarely the other person who is the threat, unless they are physically abusive. It is usually something within our thinking that undermines us. How do you view yourself after a break up? How does it make you feel? Ask questions of yourself about what a break up does and says about you and you may be able to shine the light on the threat and clear it up.

Humiliated and depressed. Not worth sticking around for.
I have not been able yet to get to the root of these feelings.
Do you have any guesses as to the black-and-yellow coloring of the snake? Maybe that would give me a clue. The generic "meanings" of those colors I find online don't really tell me anything. All I came up with is that the color combination reminds me of wasps and bees, but I don't have any bad memories regarding wasps/bees

I would say the colors could represent fear and sadness. Black in terms of depression can indicate great sadness to the point of self rejection. Both of which feel like a threat to us. There are many sides to you, not just sadness and depression. The side of you that wants to thrive and be happy feels threatened by the side that is humiliated. Ideally you will want to challenge the idea that break ups are humiliating by digging deeper into what thoughts feeling humiliated brings up. So what does being humiliated say about you? Is there another way to look at things?
