As early as the 1940s scientists had suggested that TB, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, might cross-immunise sufferers from leprosy, caused by the related Mycobacterium leprae. The idea was born when the BCG vaccine for TB occasionally appeared to be effective against leprosy as well.

What a horrible disease. There is no vaccine for it yet. Leprosy is caused by a bacteria. It is treatable and if caught early, cured. Countries like India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Indonesia still account for half of all new cases each year. Here in the US, the armadillo is a known carrier of the bacteria.
In 2020, there were 15 countries reporting more than 1,000 new cases of leprosy. These were Bangladesh, Brazil, DR Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
https://www.leprosymission.org.uk/about/faqs/
According to this chart from the WHO, there were 159 cases in the US in 2020
https://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.main.A1639?lang=en
A lot of the cases still seem to pop up in African countries still. I'm guessing lack of access to medical care, sanitation and being food insecure may also be a factor. It is spread through respiratory droplets of sneezing and coughing. According to the CDC, leprosy is hard to catch and only those with a compromised immune system or malnourished are susceptible as 95% of adults can fight off the bacteria.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru.

Yeah I was surprised when I found out about armadillos being carriers, that was years ago. They're the state animal in TX. It is legal to hunt them though.

Are you saying that as a relief? It is not the armadillo's fault... it's just the lowlife insensitive bugs.
There's also bats in the USA that may carry rabies ((an infected bat biting you at night when you keep the windows open... once symptoms kick in you'll go crazy and your bite will infect others aka you're like a zombie/vampire/etc.)).
Then there are rodents in the USA that may carry plague. Yes, it still exists. It is estimated that it killed 1/3 Europeans back in the 1340s....
There are remedies and with a good vaxx campaign it can be (near) eradicated. But that takes political will to actually help wildlife... (and thus people, indirectly)
These cases of leprosy are sad. These people are hidden and shunned for the rest of their lives.
More should be done to get rid of all these diseases.

The leprosy bacteria infect macrophages and cause them to produce nitric oxide which damages nerve cells.

Leprosy bacteria can survive in soil
Leprosy bacteria cannot survive on its own. It must live inside of a ‘host’ or even in the best conditions, it will die within a few days. The smallest host a leprosy bacteria could infect is an amoeba and American researchers have demonstrated that common soil amoeba found worldwide could host leprosy bacteria and keep it alive for months in a lab.
This means it can be possible to contract leprosy through exposure to dust and dirt in the air above soil that is infected by leprosy. It is also possible to contract leprosy if an open wound comes in contact with that soil.
