There are many ways to know if something is serious. It all depends on the situation. If you could give a few details it might help.

Well if your losing a lot of blood, I would suggest seeking medical attention immediately as that's a pretty serious situation! Hahahaha!!
I agree though....
There's not enough information here to give a better response DeepForest.
The rest would be up to you. ;)

Someone in another thread asked for a serious response.. I assume the person was seriously asking for a serious response. So before anyone answer, they ought to know when a response is serious. But trying to respond, how can someone know the response is serious.
Maybe the road to unseriousness is filled with seriousness :-)
And when is something serious? Are you serious?

Sounds like you should be asking them the question then: what they consider to be a serious response and are expecting to hear from you or others.
A serious response has depth on some level. Doesn't need to be solemn certainly as there is often great depth and wisdom in light-heartedness.

or perhaps the opposite " maybe the road to seriousness is filled with unseriousness " ?
sometimes there is a tendency to be " overly - serious " when there is no need to be ...this depends on the topic, of course ....

I'm serious!
This thread just went from bad to worse for me in the understanding department! LOL!
I'm trying hard not to take this too seriously. ;)

Someone very famous said in a very famous movie: "Why so serious?"
It depends on the context of course. If an attitude or a response to something required thought, concentration, or application. If something is really important for the person, it should be treated seriously for a reason. You will recognize it in the person's behavior.
Try to read people's emotions, you'll know if they are serious or not.
