i bet you did!
don't ignore the amount of therapy that goes on in a stylists chair. also the instant gratification of 'becoming a new person' which is real nice in a world that is far from instantaneous...
i am married to one and you would not believe what people tell her under the cape...

I am no expert on the 500+ Native Nations across North America (that would be a fun job though) but I don't think all Native/Aboriginal peoples grew their hair long. Some people preferred shaving their heads - I've seen some real cool pictures of nicely shaved beans in archives and historical research.
I know our Elders in this part of the world call Sweetgrass (a beautiful plant medicine indigenous to the Plains of North America) "Mother Earth's Hair". It is known as Kindness medicine according to our People. I haven't ever heard a definitive reason for keeping our hair long, but maybe if Mother Earth grows her Sweetgrass hair to give out kindness, maybe our hair is kept long to give out kindness too.
I have never heard of long hair being a source of "pride". It's seen as a human weakness in our values around here. We value humbleness much more as a spiritual virtue.
And maybe when we were livin off the land, working hard every day just to stay alive, hair-care didn't top the priority list for some Nations. Maybe one reason was practicality - just the braid the stuff instead of trying to figure out how to cut it!

My hair actually moves on its own. Not the hair on my head but on my eyebrows and hands. Its starts off with a buzzing and then it sticks up or flaps down backwards. It moves in such an odd way and the feeling leading up to it is also strange. It is really bizarre and I don't know anybody or any articles online where people experience this.
