Also, as a little cheat sheet to the thought game, because I know that can be rough for starters, trace the energy. A lot of the time you'll find that random or other thoughts will have an energy that is not yours, like a thread that comes from outside of yourself (all energy can be visualized as a thread, this may help when trying to track it back to its source.
Speak, and you will be spoken to. How so is up to your guides though. If you (or anyone else for that matter) would like some practice, I know quite a few spirits who would delight in helping you out and have a lot of patience with that kind of thing. Sometimes if guides see an easier way of speaking to us they won't go through the effort of training us to hear them, just because right then we don't need it.
Also, once you become sensitive enough, you will notice that the resource bends the voices so we know for certain it's not us, and because every one of us has a different energy pattern (with the special case of twin flames, which can be either total opposite or total the same, etc, again, voices can be influenced and foreign energies traced) we can tell them all apart. How similar they are in voice in that differentiation is how one can tell to what degree you are twin flames also. (There are many different percentages, my own dear sibling in spirit I enjoy calling her, Tori, is about 80% my twin flame.)
Another way of communicating is evidently through divination (cards, automatic writing, pendulum, etc) of which there are infinite forms.
You can also visualize meeting them in a place and just have a conversation that way. It will often feel like day dreaming- but understand that even if you feel like you're making up the answer,
there's a reason behind those words you choose. And there's a reason why they appeared to you the way they did (often to make us feel most comfortable) and all that other stuff. It's not random, of that I promise you
