Salt is a crystal.
...that will dissolve in water, but should be fine in more salt. ;)
I keep reading that clear quartz is a cleanser, maybe even like salt, even though they (the clear quartzes) are the ones that I've felt moved to cleanse the most often.

At that, I am approaching an "ah-ha" moment relating to what I sense of hematite. Thanks! :)

In my eyes.. No stone/crystal should be cleansed with salt or a salted solution.. Cleaning them in warm soapy water is acceptable. However there are many minerals/crystals etc that are comprised of loose sediment like Mica, Kyanite (Layered Stone/Minerals) etc.. which should not be placed in or around water or any sort of salt. The water in combination with the salt can and will seep into cracks of the minerals and if left untreated or carried for can expand these crack or seems thus factoring the minerals or cause these fragile stones to dissolve or fall apart.
Word of advice.. One must realize where the stones came from.. cleaning and cleansing must be properly maintained over the crystals life time. It maybe necessary to “shock” the crystals or mineral (assuming they can be clean with water etc) can be placed into the freezer for up to 15 min or even out in the new snow. (don’t forget where you placed them)
My Crystal blog goes into detail about proper ways to maintain your crystals and I plan on writing more articles very soon.
If you choose to cleanse with salt.. Heaven forbid.. then you will risk loosing those crystals down the road from breakage. I cant tell you whats best for your crystals because everyone seem to feel salt is the answer.. True salt itself is a mineral.. but very corrosive and over time.. you will begin to see pitting or fracters develop within or on the crystals themselves.

I don't use salt myself, but I've read that it can damage some of the softer stones (cover the salt with a cloth). In one of my books it recommends using two glass bowls, one for salt and a smaller one for the crystals.

xiola.. Many here will tell you other wise.. salting maybe something you feel comfortable with.. I'm just ralaying my experance to this effect or the negitive effects of sun light and salting.. I'm not even sure where this salting treatment ever got started.. But one thing is clear.. those who have salted and sunlight may never change and your not going to make them change. They (many) will have to experance the effects as I have for nearly 10 years working with rocks/stones & crystals. However I can't say Im an expert thou many have called me one.. I can say that I too (when I first started collecting and maintaining crystals) That I have made mistakes to and this is the only way we all learn.
So salt if you must but be prepaired for unfavorable results (over time)
