What you feel upon receiving such a present is the realization that you are loved whether or not you think you are deserving. This to me is a feeling of joy.....there is a component of love involved in joy. This is opposed to receiving a present that you had hoped for....in this case there is happiness because you have received that which you had wished for. Perhaps this clears my conscience on this topic...…:)

Yesterday I went shopping in the nearest town, and as is my habit I called in at a charity shop to check out any books. On the shelf was a boxed trilogy of books by David Godman about Papaji (
Nothing Ever Happened in three volumes). Brand new condition for $2, but because it was for charity I gave $5.
This was an unexpected treat, and my response was happiness, triggered by this external event. At the same time I realise that if something can trigger feelings of happiness within me, then other things may trigger feelings of sadness. Happiness and sadness express a duality of our experience in form.
Which makes me wonder - does spontaneous joy arising from within have a dual opposite (spontaneous gloom?), or is such joy beyond duality?
