I must say I get confused. Over amid the Flaming Swords the Buddha is virtually condemned for seeing the evil (and I assume) the "hearts of darkness" of the common folk, with the claim that Christianity is "more optimistic", but now the tables are turned!

Good grief! as Charlie Brown would say.

The OP is based on St. Francis, so I suppose Christianity should be credited rather than Buddhism. My view is it is inaccurate to say it's a mantra and pretentious to pass it off as Buddhist. Such values are merited in Buddhism - I mean most people merit them - just the content is actually Christian inspired, and Abodhi makes a fair point.

Doesn't Mr Goenkas Retreats use Mantras ?
I've not been to a Goenka retreat, but I've come across the mantra 'buddho' in the Thai Forest tradition in books and at retreats years ago. Ajahns Chah and Sumedho used to teach it. But I don't know if they still do these days.

Of all the Christian saints, Francis of Assisi remains my favorite and his Peace Prayer is one that I often remember. Your posting of the Buddhist mantra based on the Prayer of St. Francis is most welcome.
Here is a link to John Michael Talbot's musical rendition of Francis' Peace Prayer.

Born to deathless? Strange line.

I thought the same thing as I read that last line.

As you probably know, the last line in Francis' Prayer is that "In dying, we are born to eternal life". That resonates with me more.

The former quote is among my favorite life-guiding Christian passages and I quote it often.
As for the latter, let those who prefer that use it .... as it certainly hasn't resonated with me as much as the original.
I'm with you on this one.

It's a Mantra used by a Buddhist, mybe looking at why you can't see it for what it is would be of benefit to yourself.
