The astral world expropriated by Hollywood is a commodified/twisted idea of what really is.

As to religious iconography, that commodification/twisting is done when interpreted by the ignorant.

Merfolk aren't like Disney's "The Little Mermaid". Most mermaids are the equivalent to Sirens from Greek mythology in which they sing to men to lure them to their deaths, distract them from goals and just cause havoc.
Most feminine creatures from this time period were invented as a means of trying to show men what happens if they let the brain between their legs control their life anyway.

Also, Angels are very...interesting entities to look at. Most of them are not necessarily "nice". I'd say that the higher up you get into the Spheres or Choirs of Angels the more and more they become interesting. But then again, Cherubim have multiple heads/wings/mouths/etc as well as body parts of animals. If I could I would post links which portray some images I found but now I have to do it the hard way and give a physical description... sorry.
There are angels called "Thrones" which are in the First Sphere. They look like wheels (Ezekiel saw the Wheel) or circles interestingly enough. Seraphim which translates to "fiery serpent" gives way to a lot of description of them appearing like large, draconic beings. However, one thing is known is that they do have three pairs of wings. One pair for covering their eyes (as they converse with The Creator and not even they are holy enough to gaze upon The Creator's visage), one pair for flying and another pair for covering their bodies.

Oh, I forgot to add, the older Angels (in the First and some of the Second Spheres) seem to be more "chaotic" in appearance than the newer Angels in the Third sphere. In the Third sphere that's where you kinda get the whole image of "people wif wingz". I always found that to be interesting.

I remember the first time I met an Angel. I believe it was a simple Archangel from the Third Sphere and a lower Choir. Not sure. All I know is that he appeared like a living marble statue with a ring of runic energy around his head. Atop his crown there was a decoration similar to a roman officer's helmet and his heart was exposed and blood red as well as glorified in its position. His sword appeared segmented and grafted to his hand and the shield he had carried a face of a Greek Scholar/Philosopher while the Angel's face was twisted and tapered to a point, no eyes, nose or mouth was on him. The Shield spoke for him and I think it said "Quod nomine patris" before he pointed his sword at me.

Angel was being such a stupid jerk.
Just kidding. ^_^

Evil mermaids are called 'sirens'....... I guess if you have an affinity to mermaids or believe in them it may be offensive, but to most of the populace of the world they would be merely mythical, so therefore not be offensive.

I also don't like Angels portrayed in a dark way, or shown as becoming human like in the movie City of Angels......I get a feeling of wrongness within me when I see such things, but Im not offended by it.

yeah it kind of disturbed me too only because I thought it would affect children's thinking that mermaids were only evil without knowing truly who they are...and that those people who have no clue about mermaids may now have a bias towards them.

Well, given that Hollywood plays fast and loose with real events, why is anyone surprised that they do the same with mythology. Have you not noticed that, on many sites, witches are portrayed as soft-porn hookers ?

I think it's cool. Many books, video games, and cartoons contain monsters.

But do you know what mermaids truly are, Spiritlite?

*to the thread in general*

"Mermaids were noted in British folklore as unlucky omens – both foretelling disaster and provoking it. Several variants of the ballad Sir Patrick Spens depict a mermaid speaking to the doomed ships; in some, she tells them they will never see land again, and in others, she claims they are near shore, which they are wise enough to know means the same thing. They can also be a sign of rough weather." (from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid#British_Isles )

And: "Mermaids could also swim up rivers to freshwater lakes. One day, in a lake near his house, the Laird of Lorntie went to aid a woman he thought drowning; a servant of his pulled him back, warning that it was a mermaid, and the mermaid screamed after that she would have killed him if it were not for his servant."

I thought that was interesting lol.

LOL I know right. On some sites I second guess whether I am reading about Wicca or looking at porn.
