Those are pretty much the Holy Grail of metaphysical New Age crystal & gemstone books.

The Illustrated Directory of Healing Crystals, by Cassandra Eason
This book breaks down a large number of crystals in a few categories
Mythology and history, Divinatory Significance, Healing properties, Uses at work and home, uses for children and pets, protective functions, and proper ways of cleansing/recharging the energies.
the downside to this book as it does not cover nearly enough stones, just the very popular ones.
I also agree with some of the previous answers, you cant go wrong with most of Judy Hall's books...she also has a website that discusses her books in great detail... that might help you make a choice better
