Very interesting the beliefs about her in your culture! Although I have to say I'm a man and I do wear a Kuan Yin necklace! And, gosh o gosh! Nooo I can't report no bad luck at all:). On the contrary:):).I know there are just cultural beliefs. Personally I come from Europe so here, there gives no Buddhist temples in my country almost none at all, let alone a Mahayana Buddhist one, hardly anyone in Europe have ever hear about Kuan Yin. Being her devote here means you have to live without the temples,...but fortunately we are living in the age of the internet,..

Yeah I know what you mean. When I studied the history of Kuan Yin in Asia, I realized that she is not only a Buddhist deity, actually she is all across the board with different beliefs, although her description about compassion, unconditional love,..remain the same. For the most interesting part, in Chines Folk Religion you can trance Kuan Yin origin back to their source goddess and believe it or not, they had call her; Queen of Heaven. The same they have call on the other side of the planet: Mary, mother of Jesus, and before that,..well you can get the idea that indeed you can trance also Kuan yin origins back to what Chinese Folktale call: Queen of Heaven.

I recomend to check out a book about her called; She Appears: Encounters with Kwan Yin, Goddess of Compassion. I've read quite a few books about her, but at most I could recommend the book which I have mention above. The book is more of a collection of real stories about modern encounters with Kuan Yin, from people all across the spectrum, practically atheists, to Buddist, to Christians, to others who didn't never practice or follow anykind of spirituality or religion, from people with severe diseases, to hospice employees, to psychologists. I quess maybe it's the book to recommend to everyone who is into anykind of deities, where people can read very personal experiences, how are the encounters with the devine. I'm not trying to make advertisements for that book, but I think it's really very well maded and can help people in a big way to compare, understand and ''see'' how people define, understand,..devine encounters, regardless of their spiritual beliefs, religion,..
