Yes.. permaculture.. For centuries we had small scale agriculture, combining different stuff whereas now we have large scale specializations. What we need to do is transform the profession of a 'farmer' who's a specialist to one who's multifunctional. A farmer producing fruit from trees should also have flocks of chickens on the ground..
Governments aren't likely to support this, afraid of losing the ''benefits'' of scale economics (''we gotta compete with the world and over produce!''), so they keep existing structures intact through subsidizing. This must be a grassroots thing.. anyone with a reasonable sized garden can grow some vegetables, have a fruit tree, and some chickens. Wildflowers too for insects..

Eggs as a vegetarian?
I consider eating eggs as consuming an unborn fetus. And I do not consider life as invalid before birth. As one Christian rapper puts it. "Look I agree that we should give women rights. That goes for unborn women to, give em life!" Even before I became a vegetarian I had an intuitive perception about eggs being considered non vegetarian. An unfortunate truth is that because of the controversy and misunderstandings surrounding a vegetarian diet, it's much easier to practice being a vegetarian by seeking vegan foods.

Humans have been eating eggs since the beginning of our species in Africa....before we raised birds for eggs...we scavenged them from nests.
Eggs are packed with nutrition and are a natural part of the human diet and always have been.......
So I see nothing wrong with eating them at all!

I wonder, if we have done something in prehistoric times, is this a justification to continue until time immemorial? Or is there space to evolve?

Exactly.. which is why I raised my question. It's meant to serve an ethical discussion, not just observe what the norm is..
And ethically, I argue in favour of eggs since it can be harmless and environmentally sound.

I think that the real argument for a food choice should be whether it is harmful to anyone, including the other living beings involved which are the humans.. in that case eating eggs is unethical because it is harmful to the humans who would eat them, especially if those eggs are cooked which let's be honest more than 98% of humans eating eggs are going to do.

Hens don't need a rooster.
Far from unethical to recycle.

Exactly..
But here’s a major difference between vegetarianism and veganism, the former is not necessarily against using animals, whereas the latter is usually strictly against using animals. Using becomes abusing in veganism. Like you said, hens don’t need roosters to lay eggs, to not use the eggs would be wasteful. It’s also easy to do this small scale and have insignificant impact on the environment. Veganism is too extreme for my tastes..
