He passed it on
I've always liked the statue of the Buddha where he holds a begging bowl in one hand while his other reaches down to touch the earth. All these various statues have fancy names and also various "explanations" of meaning. Marco Pallis writes quite eloquently of the Touching the Earth statue, in an essay "Is there room for grace in Buddhism". We see what we see. Some just see the "heathen bowing down to wood and stone"....
Reading "Keef" Richard's autobiography, he says something about wanting the simple words "He passed it on" written on his gravestone, this in respect of the evolution of rock/the blues. Whether this was before or after falling out of the coconut tree I don't know, but his autobiography was so positive, always expressing thanks for those who has "passed it on" to him.
Anyway, we receive, we pass it on. "Keef" seems to have enjoyed the inbetween part, "empty" or not.

Is it a beggar's bowl, an alms bowl or is it the Medicine Buddha giving us a blessing as he delivers to us the knowledge of herbs (medicine) in the bowl?

Happiness is the result of an enlightened mind whereas suffering is caused by a distorted mind.

One of the most powerful Buddhist Mantras is the Medicine Buddha's Mantra.

Which, almost everybody has heard.
Om mani padme hum
but not everybody associates this mantra with the Medicine Buddha.

That sitting posture is also good way to center yourself. One palm facing upward receiving energy from the sky and the other downward sending energy into the earth.

I looked up the essay mentioned in the OP by Marco Pallis.
In the "touching the earth" icon, Pallis says that the Buddha is seated on a lotus on the waters, where the waters symbolise existence with all its teeming possibilities. The Buddha is said to show the true nature of existence, his right hand pointing downward to touch the earth, his other supporting a begging bowl which Pallis says symbolises the acceptance of the gift - grace.
Marco Pallis writes:- "In the two gestures of the Buddha the whole programme of our spiritual exigencies is summed up......an active attitude towards the world and a passive attitude towards heaven."

The beauty of Buddhism is how many version of a story thee can be.
What has been written at about the Buddhist Pagan Temples exemplifies that thought.
