Change of fortune again . 9 of pentacles .

Alex had this strange sense that despite the terrible situation everything would be taken care of. His father had been wise with his decisions and always lucky and he noticed a lottery ticket on the desk.

As Alex stepped out of the elevator he had a strange feeling that something didn't seem right. Unable to pinpoint what his gut was trying to tell him, he paused before knocking on his father's door. This late at night he didn't feel the need for formalities and pushed down on the handle.

'Dad? What's the matter? Do you know what time it is?

The glow from the desk lamp allowed Alex to see his father sitting in his chair, staring off into space.

'Dad. Is everything OK? '

Slowly his father began to lean forward, just as Alex noticed the knife glinting from between his father's shoulder blades.

I'm riveted ... and there's that Death card

10 of Wands, Knight of Cups, 10 of Cups reversed

There was no time to think about the lottery ticket now though. He absently put it in his pocket, feeling the weight on his shoulders crush him like a vice. Should he phone the police? Why did his father call him in so urgently? His thoughts wandered to his sister. He would have to tell her first. He wondered what he should say to her. He would have to break it to her gently, he had no idea what her reaction would be - this was the last thing she needed to face, she was still reeling after the breakdown of her marriage.

King of Swords, Queen of Wands, 5 of Wands, The Fool

Alex's brother-in-law, Bob Hart, had been a high profile corporate lawyer. Known for his sharp brain and razor sharp tongue.
He always felt Freya and Bob were a mismatched couple. Bob, not known to have ever let his corporate image slip, enjoyed nothing more than a good debate. Freya, however, was force of nature, forever finding worthy causes to support, arranging fundraisers. She was famous for her dinner parties, wives found her refreshing, their husbands found her in their fantasies.

They had an unusual relationship, they bickered and disagreed on many things. Alex loved Freya and respected BoB, but was always on edge, knowing that he would be expected to take sides in one of their many disagreements.
And yet the 2 of them had been a couple since Freya was 14 and Bob was 16. First love for both of them, they had stepped out into the world together.

3 of Cups reversed, the World, 7 of Wands reversed

Even when Bob was found out having an affair with a fellow uni student at his graduation, Freya stuck by his side. His father was furious when he found out - despite having recently given him a position in his firm as a young corporate lawyer to oversee all the legalities in his business, he demoted him on the spot. He lost his position, along with all the privileges that went with it. He had never felt so humiliated.

King of cups

However, Bob was a man with an eye for the ladies and there are some leopards that don't change their spots. Bob happened to meet Celeste in a local coffee shop and he was captivated. whilst he had had affairs in the past, Celeste offered him a harmony and peace and companionship that he didn't find with Freya despite the nature of their relationship. "Ridiculous" he said to himself. "I've only just said hello to this girl and yet I want to make her my future and I'm comparing her with my darling Freya" He wondered whether it was possible to have both?

Knight of Cups, 10 of Wands, 10 of Swords

Celeste must have been at least 12 years younger than Bob when they met, beautiful and somewhat ethe real to him. At 18, she was in love with being in love.
Bob found her to be needy and emotionally immature. He found it difficult to keep up the lies he had to tell, the secret meetings and her constant demands and need for reassurance.
After a few months, he finished the affair, unable to live with the constant deception.

I couldn't leave it there

Queen of Coins Rx ,The Wheel of Fortune, Page of Wands

Bob knew that if Freya ever found out about Celeste, their marriage would be finished, she would not only divorce him but take everything they had with her. It was, of course, just another way Bob could justify himself to Celeste.
Fate however, intervened, and, as it often does, took matters into its own hands........
Celeste was pregnant with Bob's baby.

Dum dum duuuuummmmmm!!!!!!!

My Steampunk deck is loving this exercise.

We appear to have halted so

3 of Coins, King of Wands, 7 of Cups

Alex stood and watched as the crime scene investigators worked, examining every detail of his father's office.
Would he now be expected to take the helm at the company? He had the drive, the ambition, but was unsure if he had the skill of leadership that his father had possessed.
He knew he had decisions to make, lots of decisions. Some that could have far reaching consequences for those around him and some on a more personal level.

Oooh ... it's getting even more interesting! Talk about twists and turns ...

7 of Pentacles reversed, the Empress

Alex's mind stopped in its tracks, when something small and shiny caught his eye, inches away from a policeman's foot. He couldn't believe no-one else had noticed it. He stood there staring at it, trying to work out what it was. He was on the verge of bringing it to the policeman's attention but for some reason, he paused. He squinted hard to try and make out it's shape - it looked like a piece of jewellery, maybe an earring, but he couldn't be sure.

7 of Swords, The Hermit

Alex knew it was wrong to withold, what would be construed as evidence, yet he didn't care. His father's business world was always hiding facts from the authorities. Alex drew a handkerchief from his pocket, deliberately dropping some loose change.
"Sorry" he said to the officer, and gathered up the money, sweeping the earring into coins. He knew it was wrong, deceitful and even downright illegal, but he didn't care.
The earring was worthy of some scrutiny. It may hold a clue as to his father's murderer was.

Alex's instinct was to go home, just as soon as he could. He could examine the evidence fully in the seclusion of his apartment with no one to interpret him. He would find the answers to the earring, who it belonged to, how and why had it come to be on the floor in his father's office. He would not rest until he had the answers.
