Remember you hand to turn a crank for 20-30 minutes in order to make ice cream?
My sister used to churn butter.

Remember the Time Travel TV show called Voyagers! (1982)?
A young man, Phineas Bogg, traveled thru time with a boy named Jeffrey Jones.
In one show, Jonathan Frakes (later to become Number One on the USS Enterprise on the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series) plays the part of Charles Lindbergh.

Remember one farm we lived on while I was growing up. During the winter, every morning we harnassed the horses, hooked them up to a manure boat and loaded the manure boat from the manure in the gutters. I remember harnassing the horses and how they would stand so gallantly. Once they were harnasses, their harnasses had "extras" on them that made them look so gallantly. Back then, harnassing the horses came 'automatically' without any teaching: today, I wonder how I was able to do that.

It's amazing what we remember doing as kids but would be unthinkable now.
I remember, for example, as a 10 year old getting up each morning and being in charge of lighting the fire complete with wraps of newspaper , firelighters , wood chippings , coal ...
And no adult to supervise .
Then once lit I had to put the fireguard over then put drapes of newspaper over so that the smoke went up the chimney and not in the room .....
SERIOUSLY !!! Who would let a 10 year old kid do that nowadays ??

You mentioned coal.......
I remember when I was 8 years old, the temperature got down to -44 Celsius/-48 Fahrenheit. We had hot water heat and at least one of the radiators in the house froze and busted.
The next year, Pops put a coal stove in the woodshed and stocked up on coal. That winter probably was the mildest winter we ever had. LOL! We never used the coal stove.
