1. I don't use incense during meditation because it is too smoky for me. Being outside or opening a window and breathing fresh air is much more conducive to meditation I believe. If it is cold outside, I will air the room before meditation and then close the window to maintain a healthy temperature.
2. As before, what nature gave us to breathe is good. If you feel that you need assistance to relax and focus, and want to scent a room, I would use aromatherapy oils in an oil burner, as these aren't smoky. Each person responds differently to oils. ylang ylang is a common one for deep relaxation, however, for me it is to heavy and makes the air feel thick. My favourite oil is lavender...much lighter.
3. Yes and yes, it's common.
