Incense + meditation questions

1.Does incense have any affect on meditations?

2.Do different incenses have different effects on the body and mind during meditation?

3. Have you ever tasted something in your mouth after meditation (or right after when you fall asleep and then wake up) . Is that normal?

4. Any incense recommendations for meditation?

Dear FA,

1. It's not a common practice to burn incense in meditation. Even I am a Buddhist, I never burn incense when meditating. The smell will draw your attention away from your meditation object. The smoke is not good for health.

2. No incense is good for meditation. When you are meditating, your body relaxes a lot. If there are harmful substance around you at that time, it can harm you more than usual.

3. I usually have some warm water after meditation. It's normal.

4. None.

Good luck,
Icy

Hi FalseAwakening

I use Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa Incense Sticks a wonderful blend indeed .

Twice a week I undergo a particular meditation that involves the elements .

The incense burns in the east as a token for the air spirits to express themselves and bring forth balance along side the other elements .

I find the sense of smell can aid one's mindful state to a place of deep peace .

obviously you need a find a smell that deeply resonates with you on some level . As Icy Su mentions your mind can be distracted in some way if there is resistance to the smell .

On the flip side if your mind is drawn to the smell .. focus your mind upon it .

1. I don't use incense during meditation because it is too smoky for me. Being outside or opening a window and breathing fresh air is much more conducive to meditation I believe. If it is cold outside, I will air the room before meditation and then close the window to maintain a healthy temperature.

2. As before, what nature gave us to breathe is good. If you feel that you need assistance to relax and focus, and want to scent a room, I would use aromatherapy oils in an oil burner, as these aren't smoky. Each person responds differently to oils. ylang ylang is a common one for deep relaxation, however, for me it is to heavy and makes the air feel thick. My favourite oil is lavender...much lighter.

3. Yes and yes, it's common.

4. I think I've answerd this in questions 1-3
