Even though the world is ripe with greedy fearful insecure behaviour doesn't mean we will stay this way.
Though I see we do walk at the cliff's edge concerning human extinction.
But hey, if it's our time to go because we never learned form our mistakes, then so be it, though I'm not going to sit around and do nothing about it.

Greed is only one aspect of it.
The other, and truly inevitable aspect of it, I speak of as an engineer.
DNA is incredibly complex. Genes never control a single aspect of an organism. DNA describes an entire system, and every part of the system interacts with every other part.
Surely there will be a lot of progress made - but mistakes are going to be made as well, with consequences that may not make themselves fully known for generations. Generations.
Science has been studying for a long time the influence of genetics on behavior and disposition, but we only know for certain it is a factor - we don't know specifics.
Ever do programming? Modern genetics will give the term 'debugging' a whole new dimension. These 'excursions' into designer people will be people, the results of which become part of the human genome - for better or worse.
Ah well, with increased power comes increased responsibility.

Many excellent titles here...
the orig Time Machine...oh yer...
though...I can't believe no one's mentioned some real tear jerkers...
-Gattica (AC, this is all over the theme of spirit over genes)
-13th Floor (too deep to sum up here ;)
-Total Recall (not a tear jerker but it's still from a Phillip K **** lads, LOL...)
- Minority Report (another from a Philip K **** story...but also moving)
- Vanilla Sky (a remake of an amazing Spanish film, abre los ojos...open your eyes...about learning to live your truth)
-AI (be honest...you cried too when mom died...again)
-Wall-E (lite but still very moving...esp credit sequence)
-and I would even include Thor (LOL)...a bit campy but so what? strong themes of spiritual redemption, stranger in a strange land aspect, and the eternity of love across all times and places.
BTW...brill thread...

Stranger in a Strange Land - when THAT movie gets made, then I will know humanity is on it's way - NOT before!

I read that so long ago, I've forgotten...
Gattica is amazing
I-robot not shabby at all.
Enemy Mine
Alien (all of them but for me, especially the last one, Resurrection)
Minority Report ~ yes
Powder
K-pax
Children of Men - the book was far far better, I thought; my son liked the movie, though.
Is the Time Machine you've mentioned the one with Roddy MacDowell and Mary Steenbergen? I liked that one, not sure if that's it...

Enemy Mine I really liked, given it's theme of different people learning to get along!

The Time Machine I'm thinking of Silvergirl is the original with Rod Taylor made in 1960.The only other version I've seen is the 2002 one with Guy Pierce which I thought was a bit lame.

I guess the movie I'm thinking of has a different title, but it's about a time machine.
