Spiritual and Religious Imagery

Here is a quote from the book Journey of Souls

I have the theory that guides appear to people who are very religious as figures of their faith. There was a case on a national television show where the child of a devout Christian family suffered a near-death experience and said she saw Jesus. When asked to draw with crayons what she saw, the little girl drew a featureless blue man standing within a halo of light.

I am curious how many of us are influenced by the spiritual and religious imagery we find in the books we read; how many of us are influenced by the imagery that was tied to the religion of our youth or past? Are the descriptions of angels, gods, God, demons, Satan, heaven, hell and so on fixed in time or do you believe this type of imagery is progressive?
