meditation
the best meditations i have had were with my eyes open and concentrating on an object that interested me and pulled me in. i followed the pull until the object revealed its magnificent beauty.

You raise a very good point. My spiritual mentor would sometimes do or say something that really commanded my attention and absorbed me completely ... after which I would sit in meditation pondering it for 8-9 hours without having any consciousness of either my body or the elapsed time.
When one is fully absorbed in something, as you indicated, meditations can be awesome and revelations just happen. When discussing meditation, it is important to discover a focus that REALLY interests the meditator as such meditations become effortless and quite revealing.
It's interesting that you mentioned "eyes open" though as it didn't make a difference to me whether the eyes were open, closed, or somewhere in between.

i believe i learned about meditation on a form from Sri Chinmoy. he advised to meditate on the form of a rose and keep the rose in mind for extended periods of time.

When I first saw Sri Chinmoy in person many years ago, he just sat on the dais and didn't say a word during the entire session. In small groups, we were directed to come forth and sit directly in front of him in silence.
I initially thought that this was very very strange .... but then realized that a lot can be communicated in complete and utter silence.
NOTE: I have been paying more and more attention to your posts lately. I hope that doesn't make you self-conscious.
