;) don't worry to much about it, as often we do maintain the skill a bit and can develop it from there.
First, I want to show you a little trick that will show you that you already possess the ability, and if you practice even this one alone, your ability to see will improve well.
So, put your hand over a dark, solid colored surface. It may be easier if you can place your hand on it, but if not, it may or may not be more difficult based on your ability to focus your eyes on certain distances.
Now, look at a finger. Right now, notice how it is in focus compared to the rest of what's around you? Well, this also means that those areas go out the fastest because they are most used (although this can be reversed through practice)
Now, maintaining that clarity, I want you to shift your gaze about an inch over your finger (of course, as the center of your gaze won't be on it, but the distance you are looking at from your point of view is the same. If you are looking at your hand on a surface, it is close enough so that you can just glance an inch above your finger and not have to worry about the distance thing (the distance thing is a lot more simple than I think I've made it sound, but I can't think of a better way of explaining it fully right this moment.)
Now just stare at that new point. Soon, you will notice that you can see what looks like heat or vibrating space around your fingers, usually extending out to around a cm or occasionally up to an inch out. This is your etheral auric body, and if you keep watching this point, you will begin to be able to make out some color. :)
And you can continue focusing to bring out the color more, or you can move your gaze again upwards and pause each time you don't see any vibrating anymore to wait for it to catch up. Then, you may see what appears to be another edge. This is another level of your aura, and you can continue on outwards and find all the edges you can :)
Personally, before I learned, for a while I did many focusing techniques as my vision always drifted if I had kept them in one place for more than a second, so I had to train my eyes to be able to watch one point for an extensive amount of time between staring-focusing meditations on a single point, and being able to move my focus farther and closer to/from me and maintain that spot (this is a common practice using the red/blue circles or creating a cross and holding it in that position, based on where you have focused your vision, which if done straining yourself can be difficult to master, but if you allow it to flow and go unstrained, then the practice is actually very easy to master once one has focusing on one point down pat.
My sister would use objects to state at also to practice seeing auras when she was younger, and fully developed those abilities.
You can also make an aura appear brighter by focusing energy into that area.
Another technique you can do with another person- do as you did with your hand but stare at their third eye, or watch just outside their body, just as you did to watch the hand. The third eye will naturally expand the aura, but if you watch outside the body, you will find it easier to see those levels I was talking about between one energy body and another, higher frequency more subtle one.
