A: During Meister Eckhart's life many of his teachings were formally condemned and suppressed because

No, he was excommunicated because he was no longer a Christian as such, but a mystic instead. Don't get angry. I just see it differently.

Imo, He was one of the greatest of 'Christian' mystics' .

Perhaps Gnostic is not the right word for him. The dictionary is quite specific what a Gnostic is.

But 'mystic' he certainly was. Mystics have the tendency to avoid religion. Most people here at SF are mystics. I'm a bit of both - religious and mystic. But I feel my journey as a mystic is coming to an end as I re-find my faith.

And why are they ''Westerners''? Islam goes all the way to Indonesia, where it is dominant. Christianity in South Korea and the Philippines. Some ''Hindu'' practices are very popular in Europe and USA.

As has also been pointed out, there are religious denominations in India that emphasize worship of deity or deities as a means to 'salvation'. Vaishnavism for example is not some minor movement..

Okay. Islam, Judaism and Christianity started in the West - (or Middle East). I was tracing these religions back to their origin.

Yes, Hinduism is not the same as mysticism. I was confusing the two. Yes, Easterners worship deities too.

In my head I was confusing Hindus with mystics.....

As a Dominican Monk He was extremely religious, as were other well known Mystics.
The Mystical experience of communion with God is the core of all the Worlds religions. Imo....

You must be like a child to enter the kingdom……the Church probably worried that ‘simple people’ might take this to heart….

Hi Honza - I'm hoping that you understand what mystic means.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru
