How, then, can their essence be within?
You can connect to spirit through yourself or others, the essence is not what the makeup of spirit is, but rather, the ‘ideas, memories, connections’ we create one with them.

If your clear in yourself ‘not contained’ by others, the spirit nature has nothing to do with separation, breaking things apart, into human ideas of essence, but rather seeing the true nature of spirit as pure and clear. It just is..

In death, we let go the body, in spirit we merge back to source. source is ‘complete’..

It’s not made up of human creations..

This fact might help you see why we continue to linger in spirit essence as human ideas of it. According to joe dispenza, By the age of thirty, most of us are around 95% programmed by others.

When you’re no longer programmed by others, you see things as they are, not as your programmed to see.

AB…..yep I would agree with you as that is the way I see it as well.

However, sometimes people use words that mean different things to them than what others think, so it’s always wise to ask them to clarify, so we have a better understanding of just what they are trying to convey. Well that’s my experience, for what it’s worth lol.

Yes true and that's when it can get confusing.
For me as I described , their spirit / soul goes to heaven.
Their "essence " , in my mind , is the "person" they were and they stay in your heart .
We do not after all forget our nearest and dearest do we after they pass ?
In my mind , their essence is their personality and everything you loved about them.
( Only my opinion too !)...
But true, we first must determine what exactly we mean by "essence" ...
A lovely word by the way.

Some people see the Essence of the person as the personality of them others see them as the spirit.
everyone holds something of their parent within them like it or not.
they are part of your DNA

Rah man - yes letting go is definitely a very hard and important lesson and I can see how it links to compassion, thank you.

Justbe - yes I think I understand how the essence is not what spirit is, as spirit is completeness in itself, whereas essence is a human construct. It really comes down to what you think actually survives death.

Red chic - so very true, clarification is important.

Angelblue - you have articulated it well and it does depend what it meant by 'essence'

Native spirit - yes it really does depend on definition as people see it differently.

Thank you for all the thoughts. I feel a bit better and calmer about it now after thinking about it some more and spending time in meditation.
