Color Dieting, Weight Loss and Your Liver

While sorting through old papers, I came upon an article I printed out about treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver from Medscape and it finally sank in just how important it is to be careful and to educate one's self about healthy dieting and weight loss.

When you are losing weight, fat is released into your blood stream and gives your liver a challenge with that extra circulating fat and can cause problems. This article has a lot of medical terminology in it, but was able to glean from it useful information, such as healthy foods to eat that give special support to the liver (e.g. broccoli, all cruciferous veggies, beets, water-soluble fiber foods, and others), supplementing with choline and amino acids (specifically methionine), betaine, vitamin E and any antioxidants, etc.

I'm very glad I ran across this article, due to my renewed attempt at weight loss. I don't think people realize how taxing weight loss is on one's body, obviously the liver being an important thing to consider and protect. So, it's not a surprise anymore, especially, that we often don't feel good when we get gung-ho on our dieting.

Hi Silver!!

I would love it if you could share the article with me. I have been working on my weight for a few weeks now and I know how much it has affected my body chemistry. I was really overweight years ago...I mean over 350 pds. I had gastric bypass surgery and got down to 135 pds very quickly which put stress on my body and organs.I am now back up to 185 and that is just not OK with me..on top of that..I am in recovery so my liver has been greatly affected. Thank goodness the liver repairs itself!! Anyway, I would like to know about supplements that help, as well. Does the article include that??

You can probably find it on Medscape, it's an old article I printed out on 10/25/07, and it says to view the article with Web enhancements (whatever that means), go to: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/410854

Try that, I'll give it a try soon if I don't forget and see if it comes up.

It's called "Treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver: Present and Emerging Therapies.

I gave the most important info on my post, but sylmarin (Milk Thistle) was mentioned. It also mentions that some prescription drugs and otc drugs can negatively effect the liver. It's just on top of all the relatively common dangerous things to the liver, losing weight means loose fat in your blood stream that puts the extra stress on your liver. This explains to me why when I lost a bunch of weight really fast in 1980, I did so well, because my maintenance diet consisted of tons of broccoli and cauliflower.

Good luck!

I thought it was important because of all the flak overweight people get and when they try to lose weight, they are trying to get better, but people don't realize what it does to your body trying to get healthy after slipping up.

I think you can sign up for it, it was in 2007, so that's' what I probably did, like a lot of places. Go to 'home' and see if they have a place where you can sign up. Yeah, I just went there, it says for a free account, just sign up for it! I think it'll be worth it because you can look up anything you want, for your family whatever health issues you got.
