Asana

Was "asana-yoga" an already known term and practice in Hinduism before Patanjali mentioned it in The Yoga Sutras?

The word Asana derives from the root As, to sit, to remain or to stay. Asana in yoga means a seat, a posture or stretching pose for preparing our bodies for sitting comfortably for meditation. pataJjali is said to have lived about four or five centuries BCE. Statues of yogis in Asanas have been found in India dating to Indus Valley civilization that flourished during third millennium BCE. I have to say that Asanas were known long before pataJjali's time.
