An astral projection is a projection into the astral, an etheric projection is a projection into the etheric (what some call the RTZ/real time zone). The latter encompasses mostly the planet, your neighborhood, your house/bedroom- these are the areas most often shifted into during etheric projections. To give a rather course visual, of concentric circles, if you painted a red circle (which we'll call the physical), and just outside this painted a blue circle (the astral), there would be an area of bleedthrough where a bit of the red paint seeped into the blue and a bit of the blue paint seeped into the red. The colors red and blue combined make the color purple. So visually you would now see a red circle, a narrow ring of purple, and beyond this an area of blue. The narrow purple ring demarks the etheric.
An etheric projection is often simply referred to as an OBE, this is when you would feel the sensation of coming up out of your body. It is harder for some because of the close proximity to the physical, which can make the shift sensations accompanying the OBE quite startling, the person can go into fear. Which stops the whole thing from happening. Gotta be persistent with your practice, and transmute the fear.
