Type of bird?

While living in Upstate, NY years ago, I came face to face with a large, dark grey bird that was 2.5 to 3 feet tall. I had just stepped out onto the 7th floor balcony for some fresh air and the bird landed at the same time I got there. We basically stared at each other for 5-10 minutes, lol. We did have lots of pigeons living on the balconies. Maybe the bird came for a snack.

I've always wanted to know what kind of bird it was. Are there any bird enthusiasts that might know? Thanks.

Thank you Iolite! The grey kestrels are so adorable! The bird I saw was leaner and longer. It had dark grey beak, body, and claws. I don't even think I saw the whites of its eyes. The feathers were all the same shade of dark grey. I think it looked more like this bird:

The Cooper's Hawk is beautiful! Thank you Sesheta! Nope, I don't think that's the bird because of its 2 toned plumage and its size.

I never thought I'd been learning about different types of birds. :)

The Northern Goshawk is a beautiful raptor! The nestlings are cutie pies! Thanks for the link Merrie! Mine is a single tone feather. The N. Goshawk is 2 toned.

That's what I'm thinking. They're rarely seen this far south, but sometimes visit and prey upon mourning doves. I saw one about 3 years ago and remember it's blood red eyes. I believe they're the biggest hawks in North America.

Could it be a peregrine falcon?

Happens to be one of my favorite avians...
