It's not everyday a film strikes you to the core and becomes an experience rather than just a quick two hours of passive entertainment. At least this is what the film Donnie Darko was for me--a total experience.

Not an overrated film in my book! :)

I agree that it had a sort of "goth" feel to it, which is another reason why I am drawn to the film. I like the melancholy edginess of it.

They made a sequel to this movie about Sarah Darko, Donnie's sister, that sucked also.
Yeah, the sequel was not a fav of mine.
It did not have the magic of the first, or because it was a near direct copy of the first story that's why it was not as good.

It's a personal preference inspirit.
Some like it and some don't. That's all there is to understanding the rating.
If more that like it vote for it, it gets a high rating but that doesn't mean everyone will like it.

The majority of people I spoke with bagged The Last Airbender, but I liked so much about it.

Donnie Darko is, to me, one of those rare near perfect movie experiences.

About seven or eight years ago,a bloke used to come round hiring out DVDs and videos. He kept them in his car boot, and I can remember picking up 'Donnie Darko' with the aim of renting it for the week.I had never heard of it before but the bloke said it was 'weird',said in a derogatory tone so I didn't bother.

After reading these opinions here I'm starting to regret that decision,it sounds just my type of film.

If you liked Donnie Darko, you will love the movie "Exotica". Its not the same but its got that eerie feel to it and its full of surprises. It was an indie 1990's film that was very highly rated.

I had a similar experience with Fightclub.
I saw the DVD cover, saw a glimpse of the preview and thought it was just a movie about guys beating each other up.
My dawta, more explorative than me at that time, said we should watch it.
I was blown away just from the opening scene.
Remains in my favs list.
