I read an article written by a medium who at the time was an NYPD officer who witnessed the plane hit the Pentagon on 9/11. She said she actually saw the spirits leaving the plane before the impact. Likewise this has been reported in a variety of other incidents involving death
However, as wstein suggested - this is probably not something you should bank on. While it may be true the spirit can depart before the cause - people die in pain and while suffering. It is a sad and unfortunate truth. Why they die this way we may never know. My father died slowly and in pain. I always felt his suffering was prolonged because he was a survivor, did not wish to give up without a fight and he unnecessarily clung to life.
