Another thinking persons sci fi film is
Tarkovsky's "Stalker"
stalkers are guides that take clients to a remote forbidden zone, where, supposedly any wish is granted.... rumored site of a meteor or ufo crash... but now forbidden to visit by the military/govt

like most of of Tarvovsky's work, it's a VERY slow pace, building tension through atmosphere rather than action-overt conflict... (and ultimately about man's fear of his power-free will) with astonishing cinematography, and a timeless setting.

I've seen it 3x times and am about ready for a 4th... as it's a haunting story and a uniquely painterly look-atmosphere

Just saw "Another Earth" ...
a sleeper that deserves much more attention. For those who care more about ideas and the mysteries of the heart, than warp drive, wormholes and alien powers.

Very impressive , very moving story with only one surprise twist that creates a dozen unexpected possibilities.. A film sure to encourage discussions.

That's very sweet.
I'm a writer and appreciate stories that don't only rely on "splosions" gunplay for drama-interest.

Tarkovsky is an acquired taste, as his stories are deeply philosophical, deeply human, as painterly as a Renior, and slowly, subtlety paced compared to many films....
He's been called the poet of cinema, as his visual style IS poetic-unique,
And typical of Russian artists. Solaris & Stalker are my favorites

But not largely appreciated by American audiences used to TV-blockbuster pacing.

I enjoy American action Sci-Fi but no one has created what he has, and like Dostoyevsky, we can gain much from his contribution.

Amazon also has quite a few pay per view selections that I've rented recently...

Didn't realise the whole film was on youtube. Wow! Defo worth a resee. Can't say I regarded as thought-provoking...unless this is about the human condition. I remember it as being hilarious - seeing the characters develop and interact immaturely. Priceless and yeah, love the surfboard finale!
