Observing the breath - who (or what) is it that breathes?
Been listening to 'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle for a second time, and at one point he says that most peoples' breath is unnaturally shallow. This is a product of unconsciousness, right? When you aren't in alignment with the present moment (ie when you're lost in thought), it has a physiological effect on you that prevents your body functioning as well as it can do.
Annnyway, I was observing my breathing as I meditated last night, and it got me to thinking - breathing's like an automatic thing, it's not something you actively do, per se, is it? But surely there's an intelligence that makes you breathe, and would it be fair to say that that intelligence is your true identity? So when you observe your breath, you're observing your true self?
Or am I over-thinking this? Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? You are on the same path as
every yogi.
Same one my guru placed me on 40 yrs ago this month.
Good, keep it up.
Yay, another soul, Lord, is realizing what is behind our breath!!!

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru.

The breathing happens without you doing it, so there's no pojnt trying to breath in any special way. As you observe it it becomes deeper or more shallow, slow or more rapid, and sometimes it barely moves at all, so the natural breath is the spontaneous breathing that is as it is.
Another interesting thing here http://www.buteyko.info/

It is where the CO2 coming in from. Is it coming the pits of the lower realms of the stomach or the higher realms of the chest.
Ones current consciousness can be determined by the way one breaths. Does one breath through the nose during the day, and through the mouth at night? does one breath through the mouth all day and night? Does one breath through the through the nose all day and night, through the upper chest region, sternum, or lower stomach?

I agree, also it's feeding the fire where our spirit lies at the roots of the soul.

You are correct, the unconscious mind does play a role on how the body functions in the human cellular structure, within the community of smart cells.
The intelligence is that of the higher consciousness, our true universal being, which of course hidden in the dark side of the unconscious mind.

It does not occur in the same way at all times. Sometimes it is deep and sometimes shallow. Sometimes rapid and sometimes slow.
