Hell that is perceived as being part of Christianity, only exists due to poor translations and misconceptions. As many newer Bibles reduce the usage of Hell from their Bibles, and in some cases have removed Hell from their Bibles.

Why is that? Is this true for mainstream Christianity (i.e. Catholicism) or just for the progressive denominations? At any rate, what is the theological argument for chucking out the idea of Hell?

Pope Francis was stated by various sources as saying ' There is no hell ' but later denied it. Most Roman Catholics do believe in hell and it is taught in Religious Ins: but not as a place for eternity.

I see that the various sections here tend to get a bit tangled. Doesn't really bother me, more an invitation....
Big John can answer for himself, but may be referring in part to St Augustine who apparently didn't know his Greek from his Latin and thus has led Christianity a merry dance ever since. Also David Bentley-Hart, an Eastern Orthodox theologian, has a quite new translation of the NT out which obviously supports his own view on all things hell.....i.e. Universalism and hells purely remedial nature.
I would have thought any half intelligent person with just a modicum of moral insight would by now have finally rejected any thoughts/beliefs in an eternal hell of perpetual conscious torment. If anyone wishes to argue about this they can argue with themselves - "I'm done" (as my grandson often says when leaving half his dinner on the plate)

That's the spirit (no pun intended)! I am glad that your zen has no spiritual borders and can penetrate the inner sanctums of the Holy See. No propriety. Like Sun Wukong.

Where do you think you are, sky? We ARE in Hell. You can't feel the pain?
I was told that if one doesn't feel the pain when a finger or ear falls off, one could be suffering from the disease of leprosy.
"Water does not know what water is," said J.Krishnamurti. Hell is home to the Devil.

In non-duality heaven and hell tend to get entangled. Perhaps take a look at my Post 41 in this thread.

BigJohn is "conversant on the Bible" as accredited by David Hansen, who is no lightweight himself.
The Catholic Church is pretty formidable also in the thinking department and not as silly as atheists (such as Richard Dawkins) think. Pope Francis is a Jesuit, a time-honored order that pitted Matteo Ricci in debates against high placed Buddhist monks and Confucian scholars in China some 400 years ago.
