I have a gnome in my garden - never had any trouble with him!
If ya want a good insect repellent, Wormwood is great for keeping mozzies away - even works dry. Cotton lavender works to and if ya dry it you can use it instead of moth balls.
Also, do some research on companion planting - basically, planting certain plants together to help repel harmful bugs or diseases without loosing all the beneficial ones.

You ucan go beyond lant communities and look up plant communities ( communities are a bit, iffy in terms of garden research), but communities work with natures naturral plant scemes
On the west coast a good example would be
White oak
madrone
cherry
wolfberry
seaspray
and thers a few more that go with iut. But these all natiuraly grow WITH that oak. So we get nature to work for us instead of the uphul battle well NEVER win ( going against natire)
