The koan seems meaningless at first, then meaning is attributed to it, and then it becomes a little deeper... and a long time ago I heard the saying 'the middle way' and over time that took on a deeper and deeper meaning.
The koan is never an answer, it just becomes more meaningful, and such is the nature of contemplation.
