what is your guilt over? is it over things you have done (or failed to do) that have hurt others? if that's the case, take steps to repair the damage. if you can't repair the damage to those you hurt, help others who were hurt in similar ways. the primary goal here is not to relieve your guilt but to do justice, to repair the harm you have caused into the world... your guilt will likely be relieved through this, but that is of secondary importance. for those who relieving their guilt is your priority over doing justice and repairing the harm they caused, they aren't ready to let go of guilt... guilt can be helpful if it motives us to do the right thing... after that, guilt serves no more purpose and is a useless tormenter, and it's time to let go, doing so by reminding yourself that you have repaired the damage and learned from your mistake and won't hurt anyone like that ever again.

but it sounds like your guilt is over bad things that have happened in your life? because of how you phrase it i get this impression. in that case, why should you feel guilty? unless there are clear and real ways that the pain in your life is the result of your own actions? if that's the case, i second john's advice, and would add that you should try to learn how to not make the same mistakes again. then you can feel some pride that you have grown and learnt, balanced with humbleness that your learning came from big screwups!

or is it a case of things that were outside your control that happened to you and were bad but you are blaming yourself for "attracting" them to you via your thoughts? if that's the case, your guilt is rooted in a false sense of control over events outside your control. stop feeling guilty cuz it ain't your fault
