Interesting question and it indeed requires explanation.
As some people have already pointed out, tarot's main purpose is to give you explanation of the current situation, and insights into yourself or other person (who you're asking). It can also tells you possible outcomes, but note that this is possible, not 100% future.
For example: a card may say "if you keep doing this action A, result B will come to you. But if you are willing to change, result C may happen instead".
The difficult part (a possible main reason why some people don't trust in the reading or message) is how to interpret the message. Tarot is a set of 78 cards, each has its own image/presentation. Since the message is presented in form of images, the reader needs to understand the image and know how to deliver its message. This is when things become tricky because some people are good at reading into this, other people are not.
In my experience, the correct percentage is 80%, so I would dare say tarot is real.
But then the question is: why it can be 80% correct? If a tarot deck has 78 cards in total, how can it be so coincidence that you get 80% correct all the time? Personally I believe it has a spirituality reason. I'll try to explain it here but you should proceed at your own consent:
If we simply consider tarot as a deck of 78 cards then it is just a normal deck of arts. But the key aspect here is that it allows you to commune with other greater spirits. This terminology is not correct, but for the sake of explanation, you can think of them as spirits of people who have lived through multiple reincarnations. They accumulated knowledge through many lives and so they are able to give us guidance.
So when you ask a question, they (the spirits) will send you message via specific cards. What's left is how you read it.
