Although I do beleive you could make a case for aliens having been more active at one point if you decided to believe certain stone carvings from ancient times depicted 'astronauts' in 'space suits'....
and I believe there is a passage in the bible where we basically told god to go away and leave us to our imaginings and he aquiesced. So it isn't like we weren't given a reason for them leaving...
But you've also got the standard case coming from other people: people at large don't want to buy into such far-fetched ideas so therefore they can't be 'true'.

hm maybe all of our history is but imagination then? We made up our own past the way we want to believe it?

I agree with the quotations there, because that's what it is all about : some people simply choose to interpret things that way.

The stories we tell are imagination (i.e. religion, alien intervention). The things we actually do can be observed or found evidence of.

yeah but you must realize that even though there is 'evidence' that still leaves plenty of room for people to make up ideas about what that evidence 'means'?

It's pretty interesting that humans can believe non-sense is true. Even more interesting is something like Santa Claus. Adults can 100% know something is not true (santa claus) and still teach their kids it is! Amazing.
(Which shows adults may teach something is true based on what they get out of it while not necessarily believing it is true.)
I would guess most of our experiential world is not real and is instead in our minds only. That's not to say the world is not real, it's to say most of our experience is sourced from mind. The real world is 100% there, but our experience of it is based on our thoughts about whatever is actually "out there."
