Regarding the origin of this poem, I may have misled you.

I came across it years ago as a Maori poem and when I searched for it this morning it was attributed to Tieme Ranapiri on various websites. I'd always thought of it as an English translation from the original Maori.

But now, searching for more about it, I see it being attributed to Ella Wheeler Wilcox from Poems of Sentiment (1911).

It is still worth sharing.

I noticed it depends on the website, so it is entirely possible of Maori origin. I read some other Wheeler poems, but I didn't see any other spirit like themes in that, which leads me to believe it may be Maori?
