I AM is a feeling of permanent awareness.
At the very center of consciousness is the feeling of 'I am'. I can forget who 'I am' or what 'I am' , but I cannot forget that 'I am'. The awareness of being still remains regardless of forgetfulness of who, and what 'I am' ...
Imo.

Another thing I'm not sure about is whether we are supposed to achieve I AM or be free of it?

You obviously have a sense of identity so you don't need to achieve what you've already achieved so what benefit would it be to you to 'be free of it' ? |

You make it sound obvious, but there is the theory of 'emptying' oneself in order to reach higher states.

This ''I AM'' puzzles me, what I know is that it's a Bible quote. Not sure otherwise. You mean you lose identity in a 'practice' you do? Or that you are, in the end, still a fixed identity?

Free of what, what is ''it''...exactly?  Free of 'who you are? Your self -as mentioned before?
Or some obscure practice of saying I AM as a mantra trying to achieve...'something'?
What do ' you' mean by ''to achieve I AM''....do you mean an expansive altered state of Cosmic Consciousness where you realize
you are All That IS, so,
that God that gave the 10 Commandments and that Being that said to Moses 'Ehyeh asher ehyeh"...English ''I am that I am"?
Or E'heyeh aser' e'heyeh, meaning "I Am Who I Am."
