Not everyone is cut out for running. But if you are, be sure to do great stretches before and after and make sure you have well fitted and good quality running shoes. I work for a company that makes running shoes and the technology behind cushioning, fit, grip - etc - is phenomenal.

You don't have to run long distances, or even fast to enjoy running. Start off slow, do a couch to 5k type of plan and then see how it goes.

Brisk walking has health benefits the same as running, only with less impact on the knees.
So if running/jogging doesn't suit you, try brisk walking instead.

Yes, I was taught by a dog, and was taught that 4-5mph walking is an absolutely brilliant way to keep the whole body toned and healthy.
The dog also taught me that we must only run when we really really feel like it, for the sheer joy of it, and only when all the body is warmed-up. And only for as long as the joy lasts and no longer. And that running on paving is not always a good idea.

The wisdom of dogs!
And very true about paving. Grass/earth absorbs the impact, concrete/tarmac doesn't ... so much more wearing on the knees.

The dog also taught me that when running in grass, sudden mole-hills, rabbit-holes, or badger-excavations are very jarring to the whole body and should be leaped over skilfully....
That it's important to be aware of the lay of the land.
Lol! But so true!

Nordic walking especially on trail and in nature. Distribute weight, much less impact on knees and ankles, work out upper body at the same time and burn up to 35% more calories than jogging.

First address what are your reasons for running. Are you doing it for the sake of the skill and sport, are you doing it for fitness, are you doing it for health, discipline, etcetera? Your answer might be a combination.
If you're not doing it for sport or the skill of running, then my easiest answer for you is that running is not necessary. There are many other exercises that can achieve the same, if not very close to the same results.
If running is not necessary to you but you still feel as though you should have the fitness and health capability to handle running pain free, then I would recommend seeing a sports doctor who can examine your posture, movement, physical constitution, and so on, to identify why you're feeling pain. This doctor will also be able to provide therapies to eliminate the pain and prevent or at least mitigate the chance of this happening again. It's difficult to find a doctor who is thorough like this, but if you can I'm confident it will help, even thought I know not much at all about your specific case. Best of luck!
