I read Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" book many years ago but no longer have it as I had lent it to someone who didn't return it. I do recall how amazed I was that a book of such profundity could be written by a Roman Emperor.
If you are familiar with Roman history, you may know that Marcus Aurelius was the last of the "Five Good Emperors" of Rome who were adopted and not otherwise related to their predecessor. The adoption was based on who would be best suited to rule as a successor. (This is very much like the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, in many ways.) There has been speculation that Marcus Aurelius was poisoned by his crazy son, Commodus, before he could "adopt" a suitable successor. Hence, Marcus Aurelius was the last of the "Five Good Emperors" and the Empire degenerated under Commodus.
I'm sure that you will enjoy the book.
