i'm thinking of "canvas" as if it were referring to soliciting votes, or seeking
opinions. the "tent" could be the big tent that gets mentioned in political
affairs. you're ready for (spiritual) transport from one place to another, and
you'll be joining in with the whole society (using 'public transport')... but your
group needs to decide upon it's objective.
