I have heard all the conspiracy theories re 21/12/2012 etc, and know that some people are seeing all the terrible natural disasters we are having lately as a harbinger off the apocolyptic end to the world. I haven't decided yet if i am one of them, but to me things seem to be way out of control, or maybe I am just noticing them more because of what's happened to my city.
Is this really the case??? I just don't get what is going on, but whatever it is I think someone/something is trying to give us a message - as in perhaps-"Clean up your act or....!"
Who knows for sure.
I once worked with a beautiful gentle soul who had very firm beliefs in a relatively new-age christian-based religion. She and I had many discussions as to the meaning of life etc as she saw it, and what happens after we die etc. I asked her once what would happen to all the billions of people who were followers of some religion other than her own- her reply- "that's just too bad- they will not ascend into heaven with Christ"- I couldn't believe that such a lovely creature truly believed that a loving, forgiving, and omnipotent God would exclude so many from His realm of salvation/heaven/nirvana...
I am not ashamed to say that I have always had a greater affinity with animals than I have with humans - generally speaking. All they ask for is love and they return it in spades. Watching the news re the devastation and massive loss of life caused in New Orleans by Katrina,Floods in Pakistan, Earthquakes in Haiti, or even the starving millions in Africa - etc etc - did not affect me anywhere near as much as say, a news item about animal cruelty. The numbers the newsreaders would read out simply didn't register with me - they were just so incomprehensibly large-I mean how many died in Haiti???Unbelievable numbers. And of course Japan this year - 25,000 washed out to sea. So sad.
So for example ( before I learned better) - I would see poverty-stricken Pakistanis wading waist deep through floodwaters- trying to hold their children and/or worldly possessions in a sack above their head and I would feel very little in response. I was numbed to it all.
However- if i saw a story about an oil spill in the gulf of Mexico or wherever and even just one single bird struggling vainly trying to clean its feathers and unable to walk or fly due to the oil covering it I would explode in a rage.
The terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 was more shocking to me than seeing millions of people living in slums/refugee camps across Africa, dying by the thousands every day from Aids and hunger.
9/11 was just one of those totally surreal days, that even though "only" two or three thousand people were killed, and "only" 2 buildings destroyed in a very big city in a very big and wealthy country-it captured EVERYONE'S attention because it was just SO unthinkable. BTW I have always found it bizarre that Bin Laden picked that day of all days- in the Southern Hemisphere we show our dates by the day first, e.g.-11/9 - but 9/11 is how the American people see that date and my (skewed!) belief is it was chosen because it reads the same as the USA's emergency code-'911' which the terrorists knew they would be overloading - maybe reading a bit much into that, but you never know...
Sorry this is so long - but I would just like to say that now that I have personally experienced the "death" of a city due to natural disasters, and had to suffer a few tiny hardships like no phone for a day, or electricity/showers for a few hours or days - I now know just how absolutely terrifying it is to be caught up in something you have ABSOLUTELY NO control over. It will be almost a year soon since any member of the general public has been allowed to set foot in what was out CBD, and no-one knows when we will be able to go there. We have lost our 2 Cathedrals, and so many churches its unbelievable-just when people needed to use them the most to pray and be comforted. Our roads are like those of a 3rd world country, houses have fallen off cliffs, and the earthquakes are just not stopping. We have had over 7000 of them since last Sept - the 5 major ones resulted in us being a city that actually had "Homeless" people!! We didn't ever have that sort of problem (visibly anyway).
Then Boom - before you know it - Japan has a dreadful event, and boom, boom boom -things are going wrong all over the globe-suddenly it is NOT just the poor peoples of the world suffering and being killed by quakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, mine and nuclear plant explosions etc etc - it is our sleepy little country and so many places like us that have never had events like that before. WHY???
I had no idea what it was like to live under military & police curfew, to be so afraid every night that another quake will hit that I and most other residents still left here wear clothes to bed, have a bag packed, or supplies enough for 3 days should you have the misfortune to be alone and stuck in your house. In fact - most people don't leave their houses unless they absolutely have to.
Only now do I understand the terror of a force so powerful it makes us humans look like pathetic little parasites - and I am WELL-OFF compared to the rest of the world- I have a roof over my head.
Every time we get a quake, my mother takes the scientific stance - oh- the ground's just settling, its a good sign (!?) - but the entire world is shaking, flooding people to death with tsunamis, killing them in volcanic eruptions, fires, landslides etc. What is HAPPENING???
I cannot believe the culture of today- even in parts of my country that haven't experienced any disasters - all people seem to care about is such trivial rubbish- who has the most "friends" on Facebook, the latest PSP, i-Phone, laptop, whatever. I can assure you that if you do NOT have an emergency kit and are as blase about one as I was prior to Sept 2010, the ONLY piece of modern technology that will be of any use to you at all is the Cellphone.
Are all of these events really harbingers of the "END" according to Mayan prophecy? All the singers seem to be cashing in on it- think Britney;J-Sean etc. Are they warnings that we need to start respecting the beautiful planet we have been given to live on and go back to basics where the main things in life were family, friends, neighbours, and having enough to survive on - nothing more, nothing less. The financial world is about to collapse - and yet billions of dollars a day are spent on useless wars. Nature doesn't really have to "cull" us - we are pretty good at doing it to ourselves-not only with military wars but biological ones-maybe viruses and bacteria will be the only survivors of the future.(!)
I think if we keep going the way we are, Mother Nature can take a break as we'll simply do the job ourselves!
How do science and faith mesh when so many bad things are happening to so many innocent people? Science has certainly given us much to be proud of and made our lives so much easier than those of our ancestors-but where does it end? When is too far? Are the 'prophets of doom" right about it all or are they simply crazy scaremongers???
If it had not been for my mother paying attention to the Govts "Get Ready/Get Thru" advice - I would not have even had any water to drink when the first quake hit. I had no stores whatsoever.
Geological activity aside - animal behaviour is becoming more and more bizarre also- thanks to our interference - yet again. Either species are disappearing from the planet, or they are multiplying unchecked and swarming into areas they never should be in - thanks to us trying to interbreed or use science to make money.
Anyway - enough dribbling on - as you can see i feel very strongly about this subject- and only now can I look at the tragedy that was New Orleans or Haiti or Japan etc etc - and truly FEEL the terror some of those people must have felt.
I don't know about the end of the world - in a biblical/apocolyptic sense - but we are sure going to have to mend our ways in many areas -we as a race cannot go on like this. Maybe spirituality and the return to love and morality it engenders will win out over the constant avarice abundant in today's world. and maybe Science - which can never explain spiritual anomalies fully, will turn its attention to altruism - not the pursuit of the mighty dollar.I just don't get it.
We ALL want the same out of life - to be happy and to feel safe and cared for - so easy isn't it? Why is it so difficult to achieve? I dunno if the world will end next year or not - if it does I hope wherever I go will be the magical place I imagine in my dreams. But one thing I do know is this :-
Quote:
WE MAKE A LIVING OUT OF WHAT WE GET
WE MAKE A LIFE OUT OF WHAT WE GIVE - ANON
