Music and memories.....

Certain songs stay with us forever don't they and for various reason.
This is the beauty of music . It reaches our soul and does something that other things simply cannot do.
It speaks to us . It comforts us. It cheers us up. It makes us cry.
And even if we don't know why , it's important to us.

So what songs are meaningful to you and why ?....

I'll start !
I remember clearly as a young girl skipping around the house on a Sunday, my mother in the kitchen preparing and cooking a Sunday roast with the radio on.
And I kept hearing this one particular song that I absolutely loved and has stayed with me all of my life and would be in my top ten without a doubt.

And that song was "Downtown" by Petula Clark.
I love it.

Hmmm.... But now that I'm older and wiser I'm thinking why was it called "downtown" ? Pet Clarke being British , and we don't call it downtown over here .... We call it the "city centre" LOL...

But never mind, still a great song.

There was always music being played in my house I had two uncles in the choir and my mother had a good voice she had a really good voice
The one record I remember is Rocking Duck i think it was.
she had a load of records. Motown classical etc

I loved my music I used to lock myself away in my room and just play music

I could loose myself in my music. I have got 400 45s and 100 albums

That's quite an impressive record collection Native.
Did you have to put your own insert into some of the 45,s ?
It does not surprise me that you come from a family of good singers given where you live!
Your little country is famous for it's lovely voices.
( Me, I can't sing a note)

But of course not ALL memorable music evokes happy memories...
For example, my mother turning the radio up full blast and singing along with "chirpy chirpy cheep cheep"..... I couldn't stand it LOL...

I can't sing a note either. It's that bad I had to mime in church services !!!

I've heard some of the ink spots music.
"Whispering grass" was one .

It's put me in mind of two songs in particular that I loved to listen to growing up.
One being
"Ol' man river" Paul Robeson.
And "Smoke gets in your eyes" The Platters.

Those deep voices like Robeson's stood out to me as a kid, two I recall were Wanderin' star by Lee Marvin and Do not foresake me oh my darling by Frank Highfield.
I think Chirp a cheep cheep was meant as a parody song given the bands name and the deliberately naff lyric, a dig at all the bland music around perhaps? We only remember the good ones and some of the really awful ones.

Oh gosh yes, I remember those , especially the Lee Marvin one . That seemed to always be on the radio or Tele forever !
Yes, it was the very deep lovely voices . Lee Marvin's was very "gravely " whereas singers in groups like the platters etc were deep and silky .

Chirpy cheep cheep I swear will haunt me till my dying day and beyond !!!!
I don't even think it was so much the horrible song but the way my mother reacted to it like a silly kid !!
And YES , she was one of those "people" that bought the corny "top of the pops " L.P' s that had a scantily clad glamour puss on the front and all the hits were by fake singers LOL...
Oh the joy !!!!!!

I much preferred to play songs on the record player like the Tornados "Telstar " or Marcel's "Blue moon"..
