Stories have the capacity to show many different perspectives, allowing the reader to find their own story within it. The fact that you have found at least two ways of looking at it....would it have been better to just see 'what is' or did joe need the illusion to find his way to truth. The truth ofcourse being represented by physically by our sun...its needed for life to exist in our conciousness, but we would disintegrate the moment we came close to experiencing it.
